The New Iloilo Airport

THE SOUTHERN BEAT By ROLLY ESPINA

Too often, we, Filipinos, tend to ignore problems that become full blown crises later on and drive people crazy. That’s exactly what is happening at the New Iloilo Airport in Cabatuan.

This problem, however, gives Negros Occidental and Land Transportation Office (LTO) officials time to address similar issues before the inauguration of new Bacolod Airport in Silay City this August.

At the moment, the Iloilo problem boils down to the high cost of taxi fare from Iloilo to Cabatuan and vice versa, which reaches P385 one way. This is simply way too costly for the average passenger.

Funny thing. It was Kalibo Airport who first have regular international flights. With the start of Incheon-Kalibo flights thrice weekly (by Asian Spirit, to be followed by PAL), with more flights being mulled from Singapore and HongKong to Kalibo. I dont think it would be feasible for Iloilo to take flights for Kalibo/Boracay bound passengers because it takes 3 hours minimum just to get from Iloilo City to Kalibo. If I was a passenger, I would rather take the one going straight to Kalibo than suffer another 3 hour bumpy ride all the way to Aklan. Everyone knows that Boracay is the country's main attraction, and therefore the international airport should have been built in Kalibo. Having two international airports in Western Visayas that doesnt serve anything concrete is stupidity. There is nothing to see in Iloilo except the churches. Now who is gonna use the international airport now? Except domestic flights?

I am not sure why everyone thinks the ONLY thing in Iloilo are the churches - has anyone heard of a very small annual festival called DINAGYANG? As much as Kalibo brings all the tourists ( and diseases - no thanks) Iloilo gets a share of the $$ tourism pie - so Iloilo was promised a new airport - and the ilonggos collected. Over and out!

The railings on the top floor of the Iloilo airport should have glass panels for safety purposes. Small children could fall off the bottom of the railings. While it is the responsibility of their parents or guardians to keep watch over them, we can never tell if one child could run off and fall through the opening.
