Carabao delays landing of plane at Iloilo Mandurriao airport
Jun 23, 2006 (PH). The Guardian Iloilo. By Francis Allan L. Angelo.
A CARABAO delayed the landing of a Philippine Airlines (PAL) plane when the animal went astray the runway of the Iloilo domestic airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City Wednesday evening.
PAL flight 145 was about to land at the airport 6:40pm the other day when the control tower advised the pilot to delay the landing procedure due to the stray carabao. The plane was carrying 61 passengers, four attendants and two pilots.Airport security personnel led by Nomar Delgado shooed the carabao away from the runway but the animal, probably disturbed by the series of thunder and lightning that time, ran into the middle of the landing strip.
With the PAL plane already delayed by nine minutes, the airport guards shot the carabao in the legs with a shotgun and finished it off with a .9mm bullet in its head. They immediately dragged the lifeless animal towards the emergency exit area allowing the plane to finally land on the airstrip.
Nelson Parreño, airport chief security officer, said the carabao was owned by Edwin Jardeleza from the nearby Brgy. San Rafael, Mandurriao. Parreño said this is the third time that Jardeleza’s carabao strayed into the runway much to the chagrin of airport security personnel.Apparently, Jardeleza’s carabao managed to destroy the barbed wire fence.Airport security personnel said cows and carabaos are tempted by the healthy grass around the runway.Aside from losing his carabao, Jardeleza also paid a P500-fine for violating a city ordinance prohibiting animals from entering the airport runway.
