ILOILO City – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's visit to Iloilo next week was postponed, according to information from the office of Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

The postponement is believed to be due to the condition of First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo, who is now recovering at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City after undergoing surgery for heart aneurysm.

President Arroyo was supposed to inaugurate the New Iloilo Airport Development Project (NIADP) in the morning of April 16 and open the National Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) meet at the Iloilo Sports Complex in the afternoon of the same day.

The Office of the Mayor was informed about the cancellation of the visit past 1 p.m. Thursday. Treñas was supposed to hold a testimonial dinner for the President during the said visit.

It is not yet clear if the inauguration of the new airport will push through next week despite the unavailability of President Arroyo.

In previous interviews, Air Transportation Office manager, Engr. Allan Java, mentioned that after the inauguration, the commercial operation of the airport would start on April 21 simultaneous with the closure of the old facilities situated in Mandurriao district.
